Temperature scales describe the same condition differently
Temperature conversion is common because Celsius and Fahrenheit remain in widespread everyday use, while Kelvin is essential in scientific and engineering contexts. The numbers are not interchangeable: each scale has a different zero point, and Fahrenheit also uses a different interval size from Celsius and Kelvin.

Celsius and Fahrenheit
Celsius is used for weather and daily measurements in most of the world. Fahrenheit remains common in the United States. Familiar reference points make rough interpretation easier: water freezes near 0 °C or 32 °F and boils near 100 °C or 212 °F at standard atmospheric pressure.
Exact conversion requires both scaling and an offset. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 and add 32. To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9.
For example, 20 °C corresponds to 68 °F. A common shortcut—doubling Celsius and adding 30—gives a nearby estimate for ordinary weather, but it is not exact and becomes less dependable away from moderate temperatures. Use a proper conversion for cooking, equipment limits, medicine, science, or any task where the result matters.
Kelvin and absolute temperature
Kelvin uses the same interval size as Celsius but begins at absolute zero. A temperature difference of one kelvin is the same size as a difference of one degree Celsius, but the scale values have a fixed offset. Kelvin is written without a degree symbol.
This distinction is important in thermodynamics, gas calculations, radiation, and other scientific relationships that depend on absolute temperature. Substituting a Celsius value where a formula requires Kelvin can produce a fundamentally incorrect result, not merely a different label.

Temperature values versus temperature differences
An absolute temperature and a change in temperature are not always converted in the same way. The offset between Celsius and Fahrenheit applies to scale values, but a temperature difference only needs the interval-size conversion.
For example, an increase of 10 Celsius degrees corresponds to an increase of 18 Fahrenheit degrees. Adding 32 would be inappropriate because the measurement describes a change, not a position on the scale. When working from technical documentation, confirm whether the number is an absolute reading or a temperature interval.
Weather and travel
When traveling between regions that use different scales, a converter can provide more useful context than memorizing isolated values. Save recurring Celsius and Fahrenheit units as favorites, then enter the forecast value whenever needed. History can preserve recent checks while planning a trip.
Be cautious with values near freezing, where a small difference can affect road conditions, pipes, plants, and outdoor equipment. For safety decisions, rely on current local forecasts and official guidance in addition to converting the displayed temperature.
Cooking and household use
Recipes may specify oven temperatures in Celsius or Fahrenheit. Convert the stated temperature, then consider whether the appliance is conventional, fan-assisted, convection, or calibrated differently. A mathematically correct scale conversion cannot account for appliance behavior or recipe-specific adjustments.
Food safety also depends on measurement location, holding time, and official guidance. Use a suitable thermometer and follow trusted food-safety recommendations; treat the converter as a scale-translation tool.
Technical measurements and precision
Industrial and scientific tasks may involve sensor ranges, storage limits, material properties, or equipment operating temperatures. Keep the source precision and tolerance in mind. More displayed decimal places do not make a sensor more accurate.
